I have a friend who makes a living by selling DVD players that can be installed on mini-vans. This makes me wonder: who would want to watch DVD when the car is bumping up and down the road? The DVDs are obviously not for the drivers, and obviously not for the car-sicks. Then I remember seeing a TV commercial for a mini-van, featuring a built-in TV and DVD player. In the commercial, a family of four is going on a road trip, and the kids in the back seats are fighting and yelling at each other. It annoys the mom and she puts on a cartoon on the TV, and the kids quiet down. Now I see its application: for a few hundred bucks, you can buy a new technology to get rid of irritable noises. See what technology brings us these days? When something is annoying we can get rid of it with technolgy. However, when the mom puts up the cartoon, has she thought of the long term impacts on the kids? Is fighting and yelling each other part of the bonding process for the kids? When the kids grow up would they have treasured the moments they fought with their brothers/sisters? Of course, the impact could be positive: the kids might learn some moral lessons from the cartoon. Nevertheless, it seems that one thing is certain: it is altering the "natural" grow-up process of the kids, for a purely selfish motive of the parents.
